Silvopasture is an agroforestry practice that utilizes a balance between grasses, grazing animals, and and a “light” mix of trees. On this farm, our pastures are managed to include naturally-occurring species of trees that produce a crop that benefits the grazers and/or humans. Thus we have managed the timber in these fenced areas by removing seed-bearing species such as tulip and sycamore, and encouraged growth of persimmon, pecan, walnut, elderberry, cherry, and oaks. Hay is cut from a field of native warm-season grasses and burr-oak trees, and we hope to establish native cool-season grasses in the adjacent pastures.IMG_20180126_102524782.jpg
